Every place you go has a vibe or a specific feel about it. Go to a Blazers game and the energy is electric. Walk into a coffee shop and the mood is often warm, but subdued. Some car dealerships are high pressure, and others are low-key and low pressure. Every place on the planet has a vibe about it, even your own home. The same can be true about any church you choose to enter.

The question that comes to mind when most people enter a church is… does this place have a vibe or feeling about it that I want to be a part of? While our church is not perfect (nor are any of our people), we want to maintain a feeling about our gatherings and our people that others will ultimately want to be a part of. In an attempt to accomplish this, we continually encourage our people to live well in the following four areas. We call this our VIBE.

VALUE OTHERS

Follow Christ’s example, therefore, as dearly loved children and walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. – Ephesians 5:1-2

Key words in the passage above are “…just as Christ loved us…” We believe that Jesus was the best model that we could pattern our lives after. With this in mind, it is our desire to value others the same way that Jesus values us. Honestly, we miss the mark on this  from time to time, but it is our goal to be known as a church, and people who truly value others. We don’t believe that love is a license to do whatever you wish, but we do believe that Christ’s love empowers us to value others in every situation we encounter in this life.

Jesus has always done this for us and we want to follow Christ’s example and value others. Jesus values you and we do too.

INSPIRE WORSHIP

I waited patiently for the Lord; he turned to me and heard my cry. 2 He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand. He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear the Lord and put their trust in him. – Psalm 4:1-3

Singing, music and congregational worship are important to us, yet they are not the main focus of this portion of our vibe/values. If you read the scripture above carefully, you will note a real sense of honesty and transparency from the writer. He was messy, he had to cry, he needed help, and he was given a firm place to stand. As a result “many” put their trust in the Lord.

As a church we want to be honest about our failures and shortcomings. We also want to be honest about our past mistakes, and even sins when we know it can help someone who is struggling. It is with this in mind that we believe that sharing about our former selves may serve as a tool for Christ to use to point others to Him. Yes, we have been muddy and messy in our past, but Jesus gave us a firm place to stand. It is important to note, that out of this truth about our story is our desire that people will look to Him for the first time. We want to inspire worship of Jesus by the way we live. Our hope is that the truth of our story will be used to inspire others to worship Christ, the One who changed us and gave us a firm place to stand.

You don’t need to be cleaned up before you come to Jesus. He loves you just as you are. He wants to give you a firm place to stand. This is our message.

BIBLICAL APPLICATION

Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. 23 Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror 24 and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. 25 But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it—not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it—they will be blessed in what they do. – James 1:22-25

Being honest about things, we discover that we’re all at a different places in this journey we call life. Some people become followers of Jesus and only have a simple or basic knowledge of scripture, while others might have significant passages of scripture memorized. The key to Biblical Application is to apply what you have read, heard or learned for yourself. We all get in trouble spiritually when we don’t apply the passages of Scripture we do know.

People see through biblical lip service, so we place a high value on biblical application. We want to hear and obey Scripture even when it is inconvenient.

ENJOY LIFE

As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. 39 She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet listening to what he said. 40 But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, "Lord, don't you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!" 41 "Martha, Martha," the Lord answered, "You are worried and upset about many things, 42 but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her." – Luke 10:38-42

Being followers of Christ, we don’t want to miss the moment, so we want to have fun and enjoy life. We want to be the people that others want to be around. Yes, there is serious work to do as a Christian, but we want to have a smile on our faces while we are doing it. Christians should be the happiest people on the planet. We should also know how to slow down and enjoy the moment.

Mary does this so well in the passage above. She has the Enjoy Life vibe down. Do you? We’re not saying that you are not going to have a bad day from time to time. We do believe that Christians can find a way to turn those days around.

When people walk into our church we know they are picking up our vibe.  Our hope is that you will walk out of our gathering and say…

these people enjoy life,
they are serious about living out Scripture,
they are honest about their past and who gets the credit, and
they really care about me.
